Overall sustainability of the natural system

Leave 50% of the agricultural property in a wild state, to ensure plant and animal diversity in the ecosystem and water replenishment.

Sustainable soil fertility and food calories

Grow 30% of the area in high carbon crops to be used for composting (wheat, maize, oats, barley, amaranth, rye, quinoa, sorghum or local equivalents). These crops should also produce significant amounts of calories for human consumption.

Ensuring a complete diet on a small area

Grow 15% of the area in special calorie root crops for the production of large amounts of calories for human consumption (e.g. potatoes, sweet potatoes, garlic and parsnips or local equivalents). A small part of this area may be devoted to crops with a medium energy yield, such as onions, turnips and leeks.

Vegetables and/or income

Grow 5% of the area in vegetable crops normally used in salads, salsas and sauces (e.g. tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers and lettuce), to balance dietary vitamins and minerals and/or income crops to minimise the export of soil nutrients.
